The Armory

Minneapolis has several excellent sports stadiums and theatres, but one of its best places to visit is the Armory, a concert venue with an interesting history. This storied concert hall can bring in the concertgoers, so it makes sense to book Armory parking ahead of time with ParkWhiz. The building was originally constructed in 1935 to house ammunition and supplies for the Minnesota National Guard using a Public Works Administration grant. It was subsequently built in the PWA Moderne architectural style and features period murals inside. The structure was utilized as the home venue for the then-Minneapolis Lakers from 1947-60 prior to their move to Los Angeles. Following the brief stint as a basketball stadium, the Armory was used for indoor motorcycle racing from 1968 to 1980, with some usage by the Minnesota National Guard continuing. A legal battle over the status of the building culminated in a 1993 ruling by the state supreme court that the building had historical status and could not be demolished. After 1998, the venue was utilized as a parking garage until 2015, when a local developer purchased the property and turned it into a concert hall and event space. The structure has been the site where two music videos were shot, namely Prince’s “1999” song and Aerosmith’s “I don’t want to miss a thing” in 1998.
