Terminal 5
There are many concert venues in Midtown Manhattan, but one that has taken off recently is Terminal 5. The venue has had soaring ticket sales since it opened, with Terminal 5 ranking consistently in the top five of Pollstar’s 100 Club Venues by worldwide ticket sales, ranking #1 in 2010 and 2011. Located in Hell’s Kitchen, Terminal 5 is part of the Bowery Presents group, which also owns the Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. The venue is on the larger side, providing 40,000 square-feet of space for 3000 revellers on three levels. Terminal 5 makes creative use of the three-level club model, purposefully placing the mezzanine of the top two levels closer to the stage than its competitors, allowing concert-goers to experience the music up close regardless of where their seats are. Terminal 5 frequently fills up with concert-goers, such that it is wise to book Terminal 5 parking ahead of time, rather than be late to the concert.
The name of the club is a homage to the old, iconic Terminal 5 at JFK Airport, which is now known as the TWA Flight Center following alterations that left only the terminal’s head house still intact. The Terminal 5 club itself opened in 2007, on the site of a former nightclub known as Club Exit. Rather than following in its predecessor’s footsteps, Terminal 5 is focused on live entertainment, special and private events. Over the short stretch of time that it has been open, Terminal 5 has booked several headlining artists, including MIA, the National, My Morning Jacket, the Raconteurs, Girl Talk, Justice, the Decemberists, They Might Be Giants, Flying Lotus, Squarepusher, Matisyahu and Animal Collective.
