More about Lyric Theatre
Just as New York City is a blend of past and present, the same is true for the Lyric Theatre on 42nd St. The modern theater was constructed in 1996 upon the site of its predecessors, the original Apollo Theatre and Lyric Theatre. Both opened within the first decade of the twentieth century, with the original Lyric acting as a musical theater while the Apollo played both vaudeville and film. Over time, these once opulent theaters became film and nightclub venues until 1990, when the State of New York and NYC formed The New 42nd Street organization to rejuvenate the the theaters in the area. The interiors of these structures were demolished, but the exterior facades and architectural details were preserved and integrated into the new building. This new theatre was first entitled the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, but it was soon renamed to the Hilton Theatre and then the Foxwoods Theatre until it renamed once more in 2014. Since reopening, the Lyric Theatre has hosted productions of Ragtime, Young Frankenstein, Jesus Christ Superstar and more. Instead of worrying about finding parking, keep the drama in the theater and book Lyric Theatre parking ahead of time with ParkWhiz!
