Water Tower Place is a massive edifice of concrete, steel and glass, rising to 74 stories, many times larger than its namesake, designed to function as a shopping mall. In addition to shopping, it also features its own theater, the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, located at the tower’s concourse. The Broadway Playhouse has been in operation at Water Tower Place in one form or another since 1976. Originally known as the Drury Lane Theatre, it changed its function multiple times. For example, it started as a live theater before turning into a cinema after its first closure in 1983 before it went full circle and became a legitimate theater once more in 2004. In this incarnation, it was owned by Anthony DeSantis, who used $9 million to refurbish the establishment before he passed away three years later.

In 2010, the theater came into the possession of Broadway In Chicago, which renamed the venue as the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place. Additionally, Broadway in Chicago performed further work on the theater, including the installation of modern theater decorations, which were designed to entice more Broadway productions. Functioning as a more intimate venue than some theaters, the Broadway Playhouse can seat 550 theater-goers in the stage itself, 250 standing and 100 seated in the lobby, in addition to 200 standing and 100 seated on the stage proper. Past performances at the Drury Lane/Broadway Playhouse include I Love Lucy on Stage, Studs Terkel’s Working, Cinderella, Meet Me in St. Louis, Pinkalicious the Musical, Shout, Xanadu and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
